Mounties in Rocky Mountain House are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a central Alberta youth.

On October 10, 2022, Rocky Mountain House RCMP received a report of a recent sexual assault of a youth. As a result of the investigation, on Oct. 13, 2022, RCMP arrested 42-year-old Tyler Kanten. Police say Kanten has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

Mounties say Kanten has been taken before a justice of the peace where he was released on conditions with his next court date set for Nov. 2, 2022, at Rocky Mountain House provincial court.

Police note that Kanten is a school teacher in Caroline, AB, but add these offences did not occur at or involve a student at the school.

On October 14, 2022, Wild Rose School Division administration says it was informed that Tyler Kanten, a teacher employed at Caroline School, was arrested and charged with sexual offences.

Given these allegations, WRSD officials say they have launched an internal review of these circumstances and will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of their students. Specifically, officials note they have made arrangements such that Kanten is not in contact with students, pending the outcome of this legal proceeding and the school division’s own internal review. Division officials say they are fully cooperating with the RCMP with respect to the division’s processes and the police investigation.

“We want to assure the students, staff and parents of Wild Rose School Division that throughout this process and at all times, student safety and the provision of powerful learning environments will continue to be our number one priority in all of our schools,” reads a statement from WRSD.
