County of Stettler issues fire restriction due to dry and windy conditions

The County of Stettler has issued a fire restriction, effective 9 a.m. on April 12.

The restriction comes as the result of extended extreme dry weather and high wind conditions.

“We advise the public to use extreme caution and that only necessary burning occurs. Be aware of the weather conditions at all times while burning. Extinguish your fire if the change in weather increases the hazard of an open fire. Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure you have the appropriate water and equipment to properly extinguish your fire,” the County says.

Off-highway vehicles (OHV) can start wildfires, so inspect your ATV frequently to ensure hot spots are free of debris, and make sure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.

There are restrictions on burning at this time.

Please consider the following:

1. NO NEW PERMITS will be issued;

2. EXISTING PERMIT holders will be allowed to complete burning within the permitted time with extreme caution;

3. ALLOWS ESSENTIAL BURNING in incinerators that are constructed of non-combustible material that have a tight-fitting metal mesh screen with openings not larger than 13 mm;

4. ALLOWS backyard fire pits, and safe wood campfires contained by non-combustible material with a metal mesh screen with openings no larger than 13 mm. Portable propane fire pits, gas or propane stoves and barbecues.

Conditions will be monitored, and the County will update the public on any changes.

The fire restriction will remain in effect until further notice.
