Central Alberta Fire girls football team gearing up for second season

Apr 3, 2024 | 4:59 PM

The Central Alberta Fire all-female football team is getting ready to compete in its second season, and will kick things off with a jamboree in Red Deer on April 6.

Games will run from 9-5:30 at The Dome for anyone interested in spectating.

Club organizers say membership this season has more than doubled, going from 15 to 33 players, and hailing from all around the region.

There will be enough players to field a U16 and U19 team this season, they say.

Greg Thompson, president of Red Deer Minor Football, says while the boost in numbers has come somewhat unexpectedly, it’s been a pleasant surprise.

“The girls have taken this and ran with it. They’ve had a big say in how it’s been run too,” says Thompson. “There’s definitely a voice there which is awesome to see. It’s awesome for them to have this as part of their identity.”

Thompson says if this is something a young girl is interested in, contact the organization for a chance to come see what it’s all about, or come check out the jamboree.

Regular season games will be played against teams in the Southern Division and then for the first time, there will be a Provincial Final with the South and North teams facing off in mid-June.

The first league games will be in Lacombe on Saturday, April 13 vs. Airdrie with kickoff at 5 p.m. Both the U16 and U19 teams are scheduled to play.
