Red Deer Archives celebrates 60th anniversary with new exhibit

In celebration of their 60^th anniversary, Red Deer Archives launched a new exhibit this week called Archival Gems.

City officials say the exhibit features favourite images selected by Archives staff and Mayor Ken Johnston, along with a brief explanation of why it was chosen.

“I am so pleased to help the Red Deer Archives mark their 60^th anniversary,” said Mayor Ken Johnston. “We are so fortunate to have this wonderful resource in our community, serving as the official repository for our community’s historical records. I’m only sorry our dear friend, the late Councillor Michael Dawe, isn’t here to celebrate this milestone with us.

The Archival Gems exhibit is on the second floor of City Hall.

To help Red Deerians celebrate the 60^th anniversary, City officials say an online community gallery is being created. Red Deerians are invited to visit the Archives online to select and submit their own favourite Archives photo. These will then be reviewed and shared in the online community gallery in the coming months.

“While we spend all day looking at our records, we don’t always know what appeals to others and why. We’re very excited to include the community in this exhibit and our celebration,” said Jillian Staniec, Archives Coordinator.
