BCHL announces Rocky Mountain Challenge to crown cross-border champion

Mar 28, 2024 | 1:41 PM

The BCHL has announced a one-off best-of-three post-season series between its 2023-24 B.C. and Alberta champions.

The Rocky Mountain Challenge is scheduled for May 31-June 2, with all three games (if necessary) being hosted by the Alberta champion.

“With the addition of the five teams from Alberta midseason and having them play a separate schedule from our B.C. teams, this felt like the perfect way to introduce competition between the two provinces, while giving the athletes a memorable event to cap off 2023-24,” said BCHL Commissioner Steven Cocker on Thursday.

“If this season is any indication, this is bound to be an action-packed weekend and will set the table for the exciting future of the BCHL.”

The BCHL announced its playoff format, save for the final series, earlier this month.

The B.C. portion of the post-season begins April 5, with the Alberta teams starting April 10.

Current Alberta division standings have Brooks and Sherwood Park well ahead in first and second, which will secure them a bye into the semi-finals. Standings for the Alberta division are based off points percentage, not points.

Blackfalds is in third with 80 points and Okotoks is one point behind them, with each having played 65 games as of March 28. Blackfalds has three games remaining, and Okotoks has four, one of those against each other.

The Bulldogs remaining home games are March 30 at 6 p.m. and April 6 at 6 p.m, both against last place Spruce Grove. Okotoks plays one each against Sherwood Park, Brooks, Blackfalds and Spruce Grove. Whoever finishes lower between the Bulldogs and Oilers will face Spruce Grove in a wild card round, while the higher seed joins Brooks and Sherwood Park automatically in the semi-finals.
