Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics recap: March 17

The Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Indoor Track team excelled at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Championships with the Queens earning gold and the Kings solidifying bronze. In addition, several RDP student-athletes received individual medals and special recognition at the conference level.

The Kings Hockey team opened the best-of-five final with a pair of wins over the Concordia University Thunder. The RDP Kings Curling team narrowly missed the playoffs at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships.

Here is a summary of the results from the past week:

ACAC Indoor Track Championships

The RDP Indoor Track team wrapped up the 2023/2024 season with a total of 15 team and individual medals at the two-day ACAC Indoor Track Championships.

The Queens had a dominant performance, earning gold with 95 points at the University of Alberta Pavilion. The Kings solidified bronze with 63 team points.

Sylvan Lake’s Zoey Longman was named ACAC Women’s Indoor Track Rookie of the Year and a member of the ACAC Women’s Indoor Track All-Conference team. Teammates Laomi Rautenbach and Justine Larson joined Longman on the Women’s All-Conference team.

Red Deer’s Ben House and Ben Higham received spots on the ACAC Men’s Indoor Track All-Conference team.

Hockey

The RDP Kings defeated the Concordia University Thunder 6-3 in game one of the best-of-five ACAC Men’s Hockey finals. Ryland McNinch, Jacob Wozney, Nolan Doell, Sean Michalevich, Jaxon Steele and Liam Stalwick scored for the Kings. Goaltender Arik Weersink made 25 saves for the Polytechnic.

In game two, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings downed the Thunder 2-1 in Edmonton. Wozney and Holden Knights recorded goals for the Kings. Weersink made 31 saves.

The RDP Kings will have an opportunity to wrap up the championship series at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m.

Curling Nationals

In New Brunswick, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Curling team (3-4) finished fifth during round robin competition and narrowly missed the playoffs at the CCAA/Curling Canada College Championships.

The Humber Hawks won gold, defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers in the finals. The SAIT Trojans Men’s Curling team picked up national bronze.
