Annual ‘CommUnity Power of One’ event returns to Red Deer with two unique programs

Mar 11, 2024 | 1:50 PM

The ninth annual CommUnity Power of One event, held in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, will be returning to Red Deer next week with not one, but two programs.

Held on March 19 at the Baymont by Wyndham (4311 49 Ave.), the free event aims to offer opportunities to connect, learn, and contribute to a more welcoming community.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966 and is commemorated annually on March 21. The day signifies the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa and calls for global efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

Organizers say the CommUnity Power of One event aligns with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) mission to build peace through education and the rejection of racial stereotypes.

“Key concepts of Remember, Reimagine, and Rebuild, represent a journey from acknowledging past injustices to envisioning a more inclusive and equitable future,” said organizers in a release.

The daytime professional development program will run from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and include breakout sessions, a youth panel, free lunch, and speakers like RCMP’s Hate Crimes Unit and Carolee Israel Turner with her topic on “The Other- How Coming Together Can Instill Change”.

The evening program, from 6 – 9:30 p.m., will be for all-ages featuring an Iftar observance with appetizers, the fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims during Ramadan, followed by music and dance. Stories will also be shared by:

  • Ivan Touko: “How I Built My Village and Made Alberta Home: First-Generation Immigrant’s Journey”
  • Patrick Mitsuing: award-winning international artists and curator known for his expertise as a multiple world champion powwow dancer.
