Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics is very proud to announce Cassidy Blair (RDP Mixed Curling team) and Sam Goodey (Kings Curling) as The RDP Athletes of the Week:

Cassidy Blair RDP Mixed Curling team Program – Bachelor of Kinesiology (1st) Hometown – Lacombe, Alberta

As a first-year skip, Cassidy Blair has been a difference maker on the Red Deer Polytechnic Mixed Curling team. At the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling Championships, Blair helped the RDP team achieve a silver medal. The RDP Mixed Curling team had an impressive 2-1 record during round robin play, but were edged by the Lakeland College Rustlers in the gold medal draw. The Bachelor of Kinesiology student was recognized as ACAC Women’s Curler of the Year and an ACAC Mixed Curling All-Conference team selection.

Lacombe’s Blair was a key contributor to her team’s success throughout the season, helping the squad earn a spot in the championships. At the ACAC Fall and Winter Regionals, Blair demonstrated her talent and incredible teamwork, helping to lead the Red Deer Polytechnic Mixed Curling team to a 12-0 record. At both regionals, the RDP team achieved the only undefeated record among 18 teams in three divisions.

Sam Goodey Kings Curling Program – Kinesiology Fitness and Health (2nd) Hometown – Lacombe, Alberta

This past weekend, Sam Goodey was willing to help the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Curling team in any way possible. At the ACAC Curling Championships, the RDP Kings were down to three players and Goodey willingly stepped up to perform extra sweeping duties. Along with displaying talent on the ice, Goodey demonstrated a relentless work ethic that helped the Kings win ACAC gold.

The RDP Kings had a 1-2 record during round robin play, but elevated their game when it mattered the most. In the semi-finals, the Kings defeated the NAIT Ooks. Then in the finals, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings downed the Concordia University Thunder to earn gold.

Goodey and the Kings continued to improve throughout the season. The team had a 6-4 record at the ACAC Fall and Winter Regionals and finished the season as the top men’s curling team in the conference.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Curling team has qualified for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships from March 12-16 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
