Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend review

This past weekend, the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens Hockey team split its weekend series with the NAIT Ooks. The RDP Queens Basketball team picked up a win and a loss. The Kings Basketball team dropped two road games against tough opponents. Both RDP Kings and Queens Volleyball squads downed the Broncos at Olds College to wrap up regular season competition.

Here is a summary of the results:

Hockey

On Friday, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the NAIT Ooks 4-1 at home. Brooke Skrypichayko, Avery Lajeunesse, Hayley Kolosky and Julie Wagner scored for the Polytechnic. Queens third-year goaltender Izzy Palumbo, who is a Bachelor of Commerce student from Golden, made 25 saves and recorded her 10th win of the season. Glendon’s Skrypichayko was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game.

In Saturday’s rematch, the third seed NAIT Ooks (17-6) picked up a 5-1 decision over the second place RDP Queens (18-6). First-year forward Rylee Mepham, who is a Bachelor of Education student, scored the lone goal for Red Deer Polytechnic. This season, Mepham has accumulated eight goals and three assists.

The Lakeland College Rustlers (19-4) sit first in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Hockey. The Rustlers, Queens and Ooks have already earned berths in the postseason.

The RDP Queens have one more game left in the regular season.

Basketball

The undefeated Lakeland College Rustlers (20-0) won 61-52 over the RDP Queens. Surrey’s Heena Sidhu had 14 points for the Queens. Both Salome Nuako and Sandra Garcia-Bernal contributed eight points for Red Deer Polytechnic.

In the final regular season game, the second place Queens (17-4) earned a 68-64 victory against the north’s fifth seed Keyano College Huskies (8-12). Lacombe’s Peighton Melton contributed 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Queens. Garcia-Bernal, who is an Educational Assistant student, accumulated 17 points, 10 assists and six steals. The RDP Queens were 41.9 per cent successful from the field. The Queens have earned a spot in the postseason.

The top five teams from both the North and South Divisions qualify for the divisional playoffs. The top two teams from each division will advance to the ACAC Women’s Final Four Basketball Tournament.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks will host the Women’s Final Four Basketball Tournament.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team dropped an 84-78 decision to the Lakeland College Rustlers (12-8). First-year Deandre Rowe sank 17 points for the Kings. Jose Mauro, who is an RDP Business Certificate student, added 14 points.

In the final regular season contest, the fifth place Kings (12-9) were downed 80-61 by the Keyano College Huskies (17-3) in Fort McMurray. The Huskies are first in the ACAC North Division. Brazil’s Eduardo Crespo led the way offensively for the Kings with 20 points. Mauro contributed 14 points. The RDP Kings were 80 per cent successful from the free-throw line.

The top five teams from both divisions, which includes the Kings, qualify for the divisional playoffs. The top two teams from each division will advance to the ACAC Men’s Final Four Basketball Tournament.

The Keyano College Huskies will host the Men’s Final Four Basketball Tournament.

Volleyball

In their final regular season match, the second place RDP Queens (13-6) defeated the Olds College Broncos (2-17) in four sets (25-20, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-23).

Queens outside hitter Emma Holmes led the way offensively, contributing 16 kills. Autumn Roos, who is a Bachelor of Education Middle Years student, added 10 kills and four service aces. Both Red Deer’s Jaiden Ferguson and Grande Prairie’s Rachel Perry had nine kills. Setter Emma Letkeman recorded 46 assists.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will compete at the ACAC Championship in Lethbridge from February 22-24.

The first place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team (16-3) swept the Olds College Broncos (8-11) on the road (25-20, 25-17 and 25-16). Red Deer’s Colby Nemeth totaled 12 kills, five digs, two service aces, two assists and one block. Sylvan Lake’s Noah Carlson added 12 kills and three digs.

The RDP Kings have qualified for the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship in Olds from February 22-24. The top four teams from both divisions advance to the championship.
