Town of Ponoka Snow and Ice Control Update

Feb 14, 2024 | 5:21 PM

Town of Ponoka snow and ice control crews are conducting sanding and salting operations on roadways throughout the community.

Crews are also conducting snow removal operations on the following routes in the Lucas Heights area, beginning February 14:

  • 54 Street from Highway 2A to 57 Avenue
  • 59 Street between 57 Avenue and 54 Street
  • 54 Avenue from 63 Street to 54 Street

Snow removal operations will also take place on the following roadways, beginning February 15:

  • 60 Street from 52 Avenue to 57 Avenue
  • 63 Street from 57 Avenue to 54 Avenue
  • 53 Avenue from 50 Street to Highway 2A
  • 57 Avenue from 54 Avenue to 63 Street.

Town officials say snow clearing operations on the roadways listed above will continue until the work is completed. Crews also continue salting and sanding sidewalks adjacent to Town-owned properties and on walking trails and park furniture such as benches, picnic tables, and more, on Wednesday in Town parks and throughout the trail system.

‘No Parking’ Signs

Residents are being advised to watch for ‘no parking’ signs and move parked vehicles from roadways on which ‘no parking’ signage is posted. Moving parked vehicles from roadways allows crews to conduct snow and ice control operations safely and more efficiently.

Removing parked vehicles from roadways on which ‘no parking’ signage is posted in advance of snow and ice control operations is also a requirement under the Town’s Traffic Bylaw 388-17 and may result in fines and towing of the vehicle at the owner’s expense if needed.

Motorists are being asked to take an alternate route to avoid snow and ice control equipment where possible.

Clear Snow and Ice from Sidewalks Bordering Property

Ponoka citizens are being asked to help keep the community safe by ensuring sidewalks that border their properties are clear of snow and ice.

“By keeping the sidewalks adjacent to your property clear of snow and ice, you are protecting the safety and well-being of your neighbours and fellow citizens in Ponoka,” said town officials in a release.

Clearing sidewalks that border a resident’s property within 48 hours after the snow or ice has been deposited is a requirement under the Town of Ponoka Community Standards Bylaw #384-17 and can result in fines when necessary.

When shovelling, residents are asked to only deposit snow and ice onto their own property and not the roadway or someone else’s property. This is also a requirement under the Bylaw. The town says that shovelling snow onto one’s own property is also good for their grass when the snow melts in the spring.

Snow Removal and Ice Control Policy

Town of Ponoka snow and ice control operations are conducted according to the Town’s Snow Removal and Ice Control Policy with the goal of improving safety for motorists and pedestrians and to support the operation of emergency services.
