RDP Athletics Athletes of the Week: February 12

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics has announced Justine Larson (Queens Indoor Track) and Jacob Wozney (Kings Hockey) as The RDP Athletes of the Week:

Justine Larson Queens Indoor Track Program – Bachelor of Education Early Years (3rd) Hometown – Strathmore, Alberta

Justine Larson was a leader and key contributor to the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Indoor Track team at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Running Room Grand Prix #2. The dedicated student-athlete’s incredible performances on the Border Paving Running Track helped guide the Queens to first place in the women’s division with 69 points. The RDP Kings and Queens also finished with the highest combined team score (121 points).

Strathmore’s Larson finished first in the 1,500 m final (5:24.67) and second in the women’s 1,000 m (3:13.75). She was also a member of the Queens 4 x 400 m relay team that took top spot (4:23.79).

Larson and her teammates will now shift their focus to the ACAC Indoor Track Championships, which will be held at the University of Alberta Pavilion March 16-17.

Jacob Wozney Kings Hockey Program – Bachelor of Education Secondary (5th) Hometown – Richmond, BC

This past weekend, Jacob Wozney made an impact for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team against the SAIT Trojans, contributing a total of five points over two games. In Friday’s road game, the fifth-year forward recorded a pair of assists and helped to lead the Kings to an impressive 7-3 victory. For his effort and production, Wozney was named the Kings Player of the Game.

On Saturday, the Bachelor of Education Secondary student was involved in all three Kings’ goals, contributing two goals and one assist in his squad’s 3-2 home win over the Trojans. Wozney helped to set up teammate Erik Miller’s game winning goal with 7:23 remaining in the third period. The quick and talented student-athlete was recognized as the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game.

Over 21 games, Wozney has 26 points (12 goals and 14 assists), which is second highest on the Kings and fourth in the league.

With the two weekend wins, the second place RDP Kings (14-8) have been on a tremendous roll, winning nine of their past 10 games. The Kings have a pair of games remaining in the regular season against the first place Briercrest College Clippers (15-5) on February 23 and 24. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings have already qualified for the playoffs.
