Trial scheduled for men charged in central Alberta homicide

Trial dates have been set for two people charged in the death of a young Maskwacis, AB, man a year-and-a-half ago.

Cole Gerald Cattleman, 26, and Chaz Joseph Cattleman, 23, both of Maskwacis, are scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench from April 7-17, 2025.

The pair were ordered to stand trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Dec. 5, 2023, during a preliminary hearing to determine if their case had enough evidence to go to trial.

It was on July 24, 2022, at 6:10 p.m., when Maskwacis RCMP were dispatched to a report of an assault with a weapon at a residence on the Montana First Nation. Mounties say the investigation determined that two suspects entered a residence and assaulted a victim.

Police say the victim died as a result of his injuries sustained in the attack. The victim was identified as a 20-year-old man.

According to RCMP, as the suspects fled, they came across a bystander who was calling 911 and assaulted him. This victim, a 56-year-old resident of Maskwacis, was taken to a local hospital by EMS, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

A short time later, Maskwacis RCMP, with assistance from RCMP Police Dog Services, and the RCMP Emergency Response Team, located and arrested the two suspects. Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

Police say the suspects were charged with one count each of second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Mounties say one suspect, Chaz Joseph Cattleman, was also unlawfully at large from parole at the time of the offense.
