‘The Color Purple’ movie screening a fundraiser for African Caribbean Centre of Central Alberta

Jan 11, 2024 | 9:20 AM

The African Caribbean Centre of Central Alberta (ACCoCA) is hosting a special private screening of recently released film ‘The Color Purple.’

Funds raised will support the organization’s new downtown centre (5017 49 St.)

It plans to use its space for programs and services such as free employability training, free mentorship training, and ESL classes. There will also be monthly cultural cafes, and there are plans for a youth summer camp in addition to the return of a summer festival Aug 17-18, 2024.

As for the movie screening, it happens Feb. 1, 2024 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Galaxy Cinemas in Gasoline Alley (357 Liberty Avenue, Red Deer County).

Early bird (through Jan. 27) prices are $45 for one ticket or $360 for a group of eight. Those go up to $50 and $400 after the early bird date.

The experience includes not only the private movie screening, but food and drinks, a red carpet and professional photos.

“ACCoCA would like to promote The Color Purple for the resilience of Black women overcoming abusive relationships and becoming successful in all aspects of life due to support from other Black women who challenge the status quo,” says Zainab Mohamoud, executive director.

“We want to create awareness with this movie and inform people who might be going through an abusive relationship to reach out to professionals and get support so that they can also overcome challenges and struggles.”

The latest version of The Color Purple is a musical, and follows in the footsteps of several adaptations based on the award-winning 1982 novel by Alice Walker about the lived experience of a young African-American girl in early 1900s Georgia. Those adaptations most famously include the Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning 1985 film of the same name.

Tickets for the ACCoCA event can be purchased on Eventbrite.
