Rebels lose in shootout against Cougars, top team in B.C. Division

The Red Deer Rebels fell 4-3 in a shootout against the Prince George Cougars on Friday night at the CN Centre.

Ended their west-coast road trip against the number one team in the B.C. Division, the Rebels lost four out of five games in the province.

In the first period, the Rebels’ Evan Smith scored his first goal of the season just over the blue line on Cougars goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen. Assisted by Nicolas Andrusiak at 5:50, the team opened the scoreboard 1-0.

Just 28 seconds later, Red Deer’s Talon Brigley scored his fifth goal this season. With Samuel Drancak getting the apple, they were now 2-0.

After 20 minutes, the Rebels were outshooting the Cougars 13-8.

In the middle frame, Red Deer’s Quentin Bourne was sent to the box for holding, giving Prince George a power play opportunity. Zac Funk capitalized at 14:42, scoring on Rebels netminder Rhett Stoesser. The home team was now on the board behind the Rebels 2-1.

The Rebels were still outshooting the Cougars 8-3 in the second period.

In the final period, another power play arose for Prince George as Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz was given a boarding penalty. The Cougars’ Ondrej Becher scored a goal at 14:33, tying the game 2-2.

Becher scored back-to-back goals shortly after at 16:09, now putting the Cougars in a 3-2 lead.

With tensions rising, Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo blasted a goal at 18:17 with a one-timer from the left wing. With Mats Lindgren and Uchacz claiming the assists, the visiting team managed to tie the game once again at 3-3.

With Red Deer outshooting Prince George in the third period 10-8, the game would now go into overtime.

With no goals scored during overtime, and the Cougars outshooting the Rebels 2-1, the teams would be headed into a shootout.

Red Deer’s Uchacz and Jhett Larson missed their shots, with the Cougars winning the game 4-3 as Becher scored a goal for the third time.

The loss keeps the Rebels in the Central Division’s fifth place with a 6-9-0-3 record, while the Cougars remain in first place of their B.C. Division with 12-5-0-0.
