Oct 20, 2023 | 10:25 PM

The Red Deer Rebels lost it all in the final period to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in a 4-1 match-up Friday night at the Enmax Centre.

The Rebels are now 1-1 versus the Hurricanes this season.

The visitors had a man advantage early in the first period when the Hurricanes’ Will Sharpe was sent off the ice for a tripping penalty. Red Deer’s Kalan Lind tipped in his first goal of the season on a rebound right in front of the net, scoring on Lethbridge’s goaltender Harrison Meneghin at 3:29. The power play goal was assisted by Mats Lindgren and Samuel Drancak, opening the scoreboard 1-0.

However, at 15:35, the Hurricanes tied the game 1-1 when Chase Pauls scored on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey.

After 20 minutes, the Rebels were outshooting the Hurricanes 7-6.

There were just a few penalties in the second period but no goals for either side. The Rebels again slightly outshot the Hurricanes 9-6.

The final period turned the game around, but not in favor of the Rebels. Major fighting penalties were given to Lethbridge’s Tyson Zimmer and Red Deer’s Quentin Bourne; however, the visiting team’s Evan Smith was also given a penalty for goalie interference. The Hurricanes capitalized on the power play opportunity with Trae Wilke scoring at 14:32. The Rebels were now behind 2-1.

Shortly after the Rebels pulled out netminder Kyle Kelsey at 16:53, Lethbridge’s Miguel Marques was given a roughing penalty along with Red Deer’s Jhett Larson and Lind, the latter also given a roughing penalty. Also at 17:22, the Hurricanes’ Brayden Edwards scored an empty netter, bringing the team to a 3-1 lead.

With Red Deer’s goaltender Kelsey back in the net and Lethbridge still at a man advantage, Edwards scored again at 18:18, earning the team a 4-1 win.

The Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 15-9 in the third period.

The Rebels are 4-4-0-1 so far this season, with the Hurricanes at 7-4-1-0.
