ONE CAT PERISHED

Fire displaces family of five from Normandeau fourplex unit

A fourplex in Red Deer’s Normandeau area is unlivable at the moment due to fire.

Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) says members responded at about 6:30 Wednesday evening to a home on Nyberg Avenue, near 68 Street.

“A family of five with multiple pets were in the unit at the time. Everyone was unharmed with the exception of one cat which sadly perished

“Our crews got called for a basement fire at this location, and arrived to a fully-involved fire in one of the units, which started in the bedroom,” says Todd Hector, Fire Safety Codes Officer. “They were able to hit the fire from outside the basement window and knock it down a bit before making entry into the unit.”

The unit in question had five people at home when the fire broke out, including two children. The damage is extensive but it remains structurally sound, Hector noted.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, though Hector says they’ve ruled out natural gas and any intentional setting.

The other three units were also evacuated but didn’t suffer any significant damage.

A section of roadway in the area was closed for some time, but has since reopened.
