Queens (2-0-0) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (1-1-0)

The Queens Hockey season could not start any better as they managed to win back-to-back to kickstart their championship defense.

In both games, they were outshot but the Polytechnic’s finishing and goaltending capabilities were outstanding, says RDP Athletics, which were the differences in the games against the Olds College Broncos and the Lakeland College Rustlers. Rookie goaltender Tora Ward (Open Studies) picked up her first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) shutout as she got the start in the Queens season opener. She stopped all 24 shots.

In the 3-0 victory, the goals came from first-year Jenna Sellen (Bachelor of Education), forward Tasha Barsby (Bachelor of Science) and defence Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) who finished her night with two points. However, defence Alesha Santos was given the player of the game with her one assist on the Mollin goal.

In their home opener, it was a much closer battle as they faced a hard-working Rustlers team that pushed them for 60 solid minutes.

The game-winner was scored by forward Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) in the 4-2 victory with the other goals coming from forward Molly Flynn (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), defense Jessica Bouffard (Business Diploma) and forward Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Arts in Communications) adding an empty-net goal. Bouffard was awarded the player of the game with a two-point night.

Queens (4-4-1) vs Medicine Hat College Rattlers (3-5-1)

• Saturday, October 7 at 2 p.m. in Red Deer

Queens (4-4-1) vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks (8-0)

• Sunday, October 8 at 12 p.m. in Red Deer

The Queens just finished their weekend with one point out of a possible six. In their game early on in the season, the Polytechnic managed to defeat the Rattlers but that was not the case this past Saturday.

The Queens would open the scoring, but the Rattlers countered it with a goal late in the first half to tie it up which ended up being the only two goals scored on Saturday afternoon. Striker Grace Smith, in the 45 minutes she played, was awarded the player of the match with the effort she was showing on the field at the top of the formation.

On the following day, the Queens would run into a red-hot Lethbridge College Kodiaks who were the only team remaining in the ACAC with an undefeated record. This record stayed flawless as the Kodiaks opened up the scoring late in the first half and cruised to a 3-0 victory. Winger and defense Payton Erick (Business Diploma) was awarded the player of the match for her ability to play in multiple positions on Sunday afternoon with a very depleted Polytechnic bench.

The point on Saturday was huge, says RDP Athletics, as they still sit in a playoff spot because of it but the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings are banging at the door as they are just one point behind the Queens.

Kings (3-3-1) vs Medicine Hat College Rattlers (2-4-2)

Kings (3-3-1) vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks (4-2-1)

• Sunday, October 8 at 2 p.m. in Red Deer

The Kings picked up two big victories on the weekend as they shut out the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Saturday before earning another clean sheet against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, who sit in second place in the South Division.

The two local strikers, Grant Johnson (Legal Assistant) and Jaeden Swartz (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) scored for the Kings in their victory against the Rattlers. With the first clean sheet of his ACAC career, goalkeeper Brian Murray (Bachelor of Education) earned the player of the match as he steered aside five shots.

The Kings rose to the challenge on the following day as they matched up with a Kodiaks squad who were coming off a 5-5 draw against the Olds College Broncos. The Polytechnic just needed one goal to seal the deal. The goal came from winger Ashton Chipman (Bachelor of Science in Biological Science) in the 64th minute. But central midfielder Gabriel Martins Fonseca (Open Studies) was awarded the player of the game for his battles in the midfield and playing a full 90 minutes. These two big wins put the Kings in a playoff spot for the first time this season as they sit in third place with 10 points which is just two points back of the Rattlers.
