Inclusive opportunities

Red Deer’s Northside Community Centre YMCA provides a place for seniors to connect

Red Deer’s YMCA has announced new opportunities and activities dedicated to seniors.

As the weather changes, the YMCA says they have identified a need that many older adults are looking for a way to stay active through the colder months.

As a result, the Northside Community Centre YMCA in the Glendale neighbourhood (6391 76 St.) will be providing inclusive fitness, arts and social connection opportunities for seniors.

“There are so many benefits of social connection for older adults, and we know that it’s an integral part of a person’s well-being,” said Vicki Wilson, General Manager of the Northside Community Centre YMCA, “combined with the more well-known benefits of staying active, having a chance to socialize and connect with others can make a big difference.”

According to the World Health Organization, loneliness and social isolation are social determinants of health, and can have a serious impact on seniors’ longevity and quality of life.

The YMCA says their mission is to provide a place for all people to find connection, building a more age-friendly community where everyone can belong.

At the community centre, they say seniors can find:

  • Gentle fitness, yoga and stretch classes: includes include Gentlefit Strength, Gentlefit Yoga and Stretch & Mobility
  • Drop-in pickleball: available during the day or in the evening
  • Beginner art classes and workshops: includes specialty workshops for seasonal projects, Painting Basics — a beginner-friendly painting class in either watercolour or acrylic, and Art in the Afternoons – a chance for anyone to bring their art or craft projects and work together with guidance from a professional artist. Every medium is welcome.
  • Coffee Connect: a new program where people of all ages can drop in for coffee and refreshments, cards, games and good company every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
