Girls in Aviation Day returns this weekend at Red Deer Regional Airport

Sep 22, 2023 | 11:14 AM

The second annual Girls in Aviation event takes off this Saturday near Red Deer Regional Airport.

“This is a day for the community and girls to come check out their regional airport, explore different careers in aviation, and learn that there’s more to this field than flight attendants and pilots,” says Stephanie Hodson, event chair, and a commercial helicopter pilot in her own right.

“There will be lots of ground crew workers, workshops, we’ll have aircrafts and many different activities for kids.”

Among an array of aircraft present will be a Griffin military helicopter, and Calgary’s AirSprint is providing several private aircraft to view.

“In aviation, we have the technicians, we have people that have to fix the aircrafts, we have business development. There’s a need for workers in airport operations, logistics, flight planning, scheduling, and it goes on from there. Right from the ground up, from baggage handlers, ground crew, ramp agents, fueling, there are all kinds of things.”

Hodson notes if you can register in advance for the event, it would really help out organizers. Around 600 people attended last year, with less than half registering beforehand.

Girls in Aviation Day is free to attend, but there will be various swag and merchandise for sale.

It is taking place specifically in the Scottsville Aviation Hangar A.

“It’s going to be a great day. We want to spark some interest in these girls, and maybe get them thinking ‘This is for me.’ It could even be your brother or your parent.”
