RDP Queens soccer team prepared to defend ACAC title

Sep 9, 2023 | 10:48 AM

The RDP Queens are set to defend their ACAC title starting this weekend.

The Queens lost their only game of the season in game one, a year ago, then rattled off 11 straight wins en route to their first ever title.

But this season, some veteran players are gone, so the question is who will step up?

“This season is going to be tough for us as we had a lot of players graduate from the Polytechnic, so it will be a bit of a rebuilding year for us. But we will still be able to compete at the top level,” says Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow, last season’s ACAC South Division Coach of the Year.

Returning, however, is Sein Furuyama, who was the South Division’s Player and Rookie of the Year, putting up a record 29 goals and helping the Queens pot a record 89 goals on the season.

There’s also co-captain Sofia Quinteros, former captain Alisha Coules, and defender Kayla Yeo who are expected to be stalwarts for the Queens.

“Sofia will remain as a key player in the defensive midfield to keep providing us with the quick transition into the attacking third,” says Peyrow. “Kayla will step in the role of centre-back to strengthen our defense alongside our ever-so-powerful Kyra Remekie (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences).”

All in all, the squad is optimistic they can repeat their success.

“Obviously, we had a great season last year and it would be amazing to reenact that this campaign.,” Peyrow says. “I believe the ladies have it in them to execute a great season. The energy is high as these ladies want to impress. The players all know that they need to perform well as the bar has been raised for this program.”

The Queens season starts on the road this weekend as they head to Lethbridge on Saturday to battle with the Kodiaks at 2 p.m. They then travel to Medicine Hat to take on the Rattlers at noon on Sunday.
