The first WHL Pre-season game for the Red Deer Rebels was nothing short of thrilling as they battled their way to a 5 – 4 overtime win over the Calgary Hitmen at the Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex Friday night.

The game was also the first for the Rebels’ new head coach Derrick Walser, who previously told rdnewsNOW that his goal was to “win every game”.

Early in the first period, the Rebels’ Quentin Bourne was given a penalty for tripping, leading to the Hitmen’s Wyatt Pisarczyk to score a power play goal, his first of the pre-season, on Red Deer’s goaltender Taylor Tabashniuk just after the five-minute mark to make it 1-0 Hitmen.

After 20 minutes of play, Calgary outshot Red Deer 11-7, and led 1-0.

It was a tug of war in the middle frame, when the Rebels’ Jeremiah Roberts scored his team’s first goal, similarly after the five-minute mark on the Hitmen’s netminder Alex Garrett. Assisted by Steven Steranka and Jake Missura, the game was now tied 1-1.

Two minutes later, the Hitmen’s Benjamin Kindel regained the home team’s lead 2-1 when he scored at the 7:20 mark with assists coming from Carter MacAdams and Keets Fawcett.

But at the half-way mark, Calgary’s Reese Hamilton was sent to the box for holding, giving the Rebels the man advantage. Red Deer’s Samuel Drancak scored on the power play with the help of Talon Brigley and Dwayne Jean Jr., both from last season’s Rebels team, for a 2-2 tie.

However, the Hitmen’s Keets Fawcett nudged his team forward with a goal at 11:53, with assists coming from Carter MacAdams and Reese Hamilton to close out the period at 3-2.

The Rebels outshot the Hitmen 13-12 in the second period.

Then, just over five minutes into the third period, Red Deer’s Jeramiah Roberts and Calgary’s Keets Fawcett were each given 15-minutes worth of penalties including a game misconduct and major fighting penalty.

Three minutes later, the Rebels Quentin Bourne tied the game 3-3 with Nicholas Andrusiak claiming the assist.

The Hitmen regained the edge once again, however, as Maxim Muranov scored at 9:55, with Parker MacDougall and Jason Spizawka assisting on the play to make it 4-3 Calgary.

But Red Deer’s Beckett Hamilton responded soon afterwards when he scored his first of the pre-season at 11:28 to tie the game 4-4. Quentin Bourne and Nicholas Andrusiak were credited with the assists.

The score remained 4-4 after 60 minutes with Red Deer outshooting Calgary 16-9 in the third period and 36-32 overall.

Heading into overtime, it didn’t last long as Red Deer’s Dwayne Jean Jr. scored unassisted at the 2:55 mark to claim the 5-4 overtime victory.

The Rebels also outshot the Hitmen 2-1 in OT and 38-33 overall.

Both teams went 1/3 on the power play.

All three stars went to the Hitmen, with Jason Spizawka receiving the game’s third star, Keets Fawcett the second star, and Maxim Muranov the first.

The Rebels will next host the Edmonton Oil Kings at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. for their second of four-pre-season games.
