Rebels hire Bentley’s Clayton Beddoes as assistant coach

A central Alberta boy is coming home to help coach the Red Deer Rebels.

The WHL club announced Thursday it has hired Clayton Beddoes, a native of Bentley, as an assistant coach.

Beddoes had a lengthy pro career, including a stop with the Rebels as skills coach for the 2014-15 season.

Before that, he was an AJHL Red Deer Rustler (1988-89), played 60 games with the Boston Bruins (2G, 8A), and 133 AHL games with the Providence Bruins (37G, 58A), then wrapped up his playing days with WSV Sterving of the Italian Hockey League-Serie A in 2001-02.

He won the Spengler Cup with Team Canada in 1992.

“We are very excited to add Clayton to our club,” says Brent Sutter, Rebels owner, president and general manager. “His extensive hockey knowledge as both a player and coach will be a great compliment to our young coaching staff.”

Aside from the first stint with Red Deer, Beddoe’s coaching career has taken him to Germany and Italy, with each country’s national men’s team, and he was an assistant coach in 2021-22 for the KHL’s Kunlun Red Star, as well as the Chinese national program.

That included a trip to the Beijing 2022 Olympics with Team China.

Beddoes’ hiring comes just a few days after the Rebels announced the hiring of new Head Coach Derrick Walser. Joining them behind the bench are Assistant Coach Mike Egener, Skills Coach Erik Lodge, and Director of Goaltending/Goaltending Coach Ian Gordon.
