Didsbury RCMP confirm damage from July 1 tornado

July 2, 2023, 9:50 a.m.

At this time, Didsbury RCMP can report that 14 houses were affected by the tornado. Five houses were completely destroyed.

Carstairs and Didsbury Fire were deployed to scene as well as RCMP. One woman was trapped in her basement as her home was destroyed above her, but thankfully Carstairs Fire Department pulled her from the ruble and she only suffered minor injuries. No other people have been injured.

Mounties say 25 cows and 20 chickens are deceased and one horse needed to be put down.

Emergency responders are still in the area.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), between approximately 1:45 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. MDT on July 1, ECCC received many reports and photos of an ongoing tornado occurring between Didsbury and Carstairs. Officials confirm this tornado caused damage to several homes and farm buildings, as well as power infrastructure in the area.

ECCC says it is conducting a damage survey, in collaboration with the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), and will update with more information as it becomes available.

The latest report from the ground in Didsbury RCMP detachment area is that numerous home have been damaged.

However, at this time, it does not appear that anyone was injured.

As more information become available, updates will be provided, say RCMP.

On July 1, 2023, at 1:51 p.m., Didsbury RCMP received reports of a large tornado in Mountain View County, Highway 2 at 581 specifically, ranging from 1-2 km wide.

Mounties say houses have been damaged and injured reported.

Police say an update will be sent when RCMP have more information.
