Fully accessible fishing dock opens in Lacombe

A fully accessible fishing dock opened in Lacombe on Saturday, a stone’s throw from the world’s largest fishing lure.

A grand opening took place Saturday on what is Kids Can Catch Day, an initiative of the Lacombe Fish and Game Association (LFGA).

The dock, situated at the popular Len Thompson Trout Pond on the east side of Hwy 2A, can now be utilized by everybody, the LFGA says.

“This new accessible fishing dock took nearly two years of planning, collaboration, fundraising and finally construction. We couldn’t be happier with the funding partners, and our various contractors that helped to make our vision a reality,” says Brad Pallister, LFGA vice-president.

“To be able to have it all completed and ready for grand opening on this day is extra special. We are very confident that this dock will further allow people of all levels of mobility to access fishing. To have this fishing facility that will make a positive impact on someone’s life with accessibility challenges, it fits with one of our core goals as an association. It’s a very special day.”

The dock extends about 100 feet in a semi-circle, and is about 100 feet wide. There are two points of access from shore for easier movement.

It was funded with money from the province ($80,000), Lacombe County ($75,000), the City of Lacombe ($75,000), the Lacombe Fish and Game Association ($50,000), the Team Jigger Foundation ($15,000), and Len Thompson Lures ($15,000).

Between 2,000 and 6,000 rainbow trout and tiger trout are sticked in the five-acre pond each year.
