Students at the Red Deer Public Schools District (RDPSD) are getting ready to flex their creativity muscles the 32nd annual Young Writers’ and Creators’ Conference.

On May 19, held at Oriole Park Elementary School (5 Oldbury St) for the past 30 years, roughly 250 Grade 4-6 students are expected to participate in the day filled with authors, writers, artists, and creators.

“We have creators coming from across Alberta, but also from within our school division,” said Lori Irvine, Principal at Oriole Park Elementary School. “Under the direction of these very experienced poets, authors, and writers, the students will get to explore and bring to life the writing and creating process.”

The District confirmed there are 19 sessions students can take part in, some including:

  • How to Write a Fantasy Story with Author Tyler Enfield
  • Digital Comics Using Storyboard That! With Tracy Wirtanen
  • Bracelets, Pyramids and Ninjas with Author Sigmund Brouwer
  • Storytelling & Knowledge Keeping – From an Indigenous Point of View by First Nations Teachers Terry Lakey
  • Writing for Radio and Television by TV & Radio Broadcasting by Al Redel and Randy Redel
  • Drawing Your Favourite Friend by Art Teacher Hana Wolfe
  • Improv for Storytellers by Drama Teacher Tara Koett

“Literacy is a priority for Red Deer Public Schools, so this certainly aligns with our school and Division goals to encourage literacy in students. Our students will see the beauty and joy that is embedded in literacy and how words bring ideas to life,” said Irvine.
