Red Deer Hospice hosts 16th annual run/hike fundraiser in new location this May

May 11, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The Red Deer Hospice will be hosting their 16th annual Run/Hike fundraiser at a new location this year.

On May 28, participants will be able to choose between a one, three or five km run/hike beginning at Bower Ponds (4715 Fountain Dr) and continuing on the surrounding trails.

“The event really isn’t about speed or who wins; it’s just an opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one, spend time with friends and family and just get out and get moving while raising money to support end-of-life care in central Alberta,” said Janelle Spady, Donor Relations & Event Coordinator for the Hospice.

She says this is one of their largest fundraising events, expecting between 200-250 people, with this year’s goal at $38,000.

The run begins at 10 a.m. with registration at $25 for adults and free for children under 12 years of age. Participants will be provided with free breakfast snacks, a swag bag and a burger lunch by Mr. Mike’s restaurant.

Prizes, donated by local organizations, will also be given to teams and individuals with the most funds raised.

The Hospice (99 Arnot Ave) is a free residential end-of-life care facility and non-profit society. Spady says they focus on compassion, connection and comfort as most residents are given a prognosis of four months or less.

“It really is a home away from home; we are providing families with the opportunity to be able to be a family again. A lot of times you’ll become a caregiver for your loved one and this is a place where they really are cared for 24 hours a day. It’s a beautiful facility; everyone’s heart is there to be a part of someone’s end-of-life,” she said.

The Hospice provides a full kitchen and staff, 24-hour nursing care, and multi-purpose rooms for respite care, education opportunities and day programs.

“We do receive a portion of our funding from Alberta Health Services for operational costs but to meet our budget and provide these additional services, we rely on fundraising and donations. So that’s why this event is so incredibly important to the Hospice,” said Anisa Ahmad, Fund Development, Communication and Marketing Manager for the Hospice.

Although Spady says they are grateful to already have all the volunteers needed for the event, they are always looking for volunteers at the Hospice.

If participants are running in honour of a loved one, they can send a picture to the Hospice at events@reddeerhospice.com for it to be shared on their “In Honor of” album on their website and Facebook page.

Interested participants can register for the run/hike in-person at 9 a.m. or online. The first 200 registrants with also receive a free t-shirt.

Located in the quiet area of Anders on the Lake with the Memorial Gardens across the street, the Hospice has 16 individual resident rooms with a hospital bed, a living-room style seating area, pull-out couch, chairs, and television with cable.
