Kicking PancreAS run/walk in Red Deer on June 3

The Kicking PancreAS 5K run/walk returns to Red Deer this June 3, in support of the Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society (CCPCS).

According to organizers, over half of pancreatic cancer diagnoses in Alberta come when the patient is already in stage four.

In addition to funds raised, the event hopes to shine a light on the disease in order to help people avoid receiving such devastating news.

Pancreatic cancer, in fact, has one of the highest mortality rates of all major cancers, and is the 11th most commonly diagnosed.

“Kicking PancreAS™ 5K is a unique, evening 5km run/walk, that is a fun evening for all abilities and ages and comes with tons of great swag! Participants are encouraged to wear purple costumes and glow in the dark items,” says Meaghan Clarke, race coordinator.

In 2022, an estimated 640 Albertans were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with a projected death rate that would see 530 of them pass away, organizers note.

Stefanie Condon-Oldreive, CCPCS founder/director, says the society is very happy to be back doing in-person events.

“Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society is thrilled to bring this amazing event back to Alberta after three years of virtual runs, and COVID-19,” she says. “COVID-19 has made significant challenges for both health care professionals and patients during a cancer diagnosis. It is important that we shine a light on this devastating disease, that is unlike any other cancer.”

Participants can pick up their race kit at the Red Deer Running Room between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. on June 2. Participants will meet at Bower Ponds at 7:00 p.m. on June 3.
