3D billboard in Red Deer highlights classroom overcrowding

Apr 20, 2023 | 9:39 AM

A provocative billboard in south Red Deer aims to highlight larger than appropriate class sizes in Alberta.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association paid for the billboard as part of the third phase of its provincial Stand for Education campaign, calling on political parties to make commitments to solve critical classroom conditions affecting students’ potential.

ATA President Jason Schilling visited the unique 3D billboard this week, which features 33 actual classroom chairs attached to it, highlighting overcrowding

“Teachers are deeply concerned about the impact large class sizes are having on students. Red Deer, like all growing Alberta cities, has too many overcrowded classrooms with increasing numbers of students with complex needs,” said Schilling. “If students are going to get the support they deserve, teachers and parents need to see real commitments from all political parties to solve the many issues facing our public education system.”

The ATA shared that according to recent polling by TrendWatch Alberta:

  • 77 per cent of Albertans say that K–12 education will be an important issue for them when determining how to vote,
  • 73 per cent believe that class sizes in Alberta’s schools are too big, and
  • 70 per cent believe that the Alberta government is not spending enough on public education.
