An organization’s budget might not be the most exciting topic to some, but it’s an essential part of daily operations and affects each and every employee, say officials at Red Deer Public Schools (RDPSD).

Last week, say officials, about 50 staff members gathered to learn about Red Deer Public’s budget process.

Led by Superintendent Chad Erickson and Secretary Treasurer Colin Cairney, Managing Operations and Visionary Leadership focused on the Division’s budget planning cycle, how Red Deer Public is funded, and how some decisions are made. Officials say attendees also had an opportunity to ask questions.

Managing Operations and Visionary Leadership was the fourth session in the Aspiring Leaders program, hosted by the Division’s Human Resources Department.

Officials say Red Deer Public Schools operates on a $125 million budget annually. The fiscal budget year takes place from September to August, while the Division’s budget planning cycle begins in December with the final budget approved by May 31 each year.

Associate Superintendent, Human Resources Corrine Thorsteinson, said it was encouraging to see many staff members interested in learning about Red Deer Public’s budget process.

“Our budget process is a big piece of our operations each year, so to see the level of engagement by our staff was really great,” said Thorsteinson. “They had some great questions and I hope they left the session with a better understanding of not only the budget process, but why decisions are made, and the challenges that our Division faces in making those decisions.”

Officials say more Aspiring Leaders sessions will take place throughout the rest of the school year.

“We encourage staff, who haven’t already registered, to consider signing up for one or both of our last two sessions of this school year,” added Thorsteinson. “These sessions are a perfect opportunity for any Red Deer Public employee who wants to explore whether a formal leadership position is right for them; wants to build or enhance their leadership toolkit; wants to lead where they are at; or wants an opportunity to learn from and engage with other colleagues interested in leadership.”
