Didsbury RCMP recover stolen vehicle and arrest two

Apr 3, 2023 | 2:53 PM

RCMP are highlighting the importance of reporting suspicious activity to police following the arrest of two people and the seizure of drugs and a stolen vehicle in central Alberta last week.

On March 31, 2023, at 9:03 a.m., Didsbury RCMP were notified of a suspicious vehicle on Township Road 293a in Mountain View County. En route to the location, patrol officers were notified the suspicious vehicle had been reported stolen out of Calgary. Officers located the vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road and arrested two male suspects.

Upon arrest, however, Mounties say one of the male suspects attempted to flee on foot through a field. A civilian working in the immediate area attempted to assist the officers in stopping the suspect, but it was at that time RCMP say the suspect informed the civilian he was armed and would shoot them if they didn’t move out of the way.

Fortunately, the suspect was quickly apprehended by officers without further incident. Officers did not locate a firearm on the suspect and the civilian was not harmed.

RCMP say officers recovered a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado which was reported stolen overnight from a residence in Calgary and seized a quantity of drugs believed to be the following:

  • Fentanyl – 29.4 grams
  • Methamphetamine – 40.6 grams
  • Cocaine – 13.2 grams
  • Crack Cocaine – 8.6 grams

Steven Blair Draxel, 29, a resident of Calgary, has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Possession of break and enter tools
  • Resisting arrest
  • Uttering threats
  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking
  • Failing to comply with court ordered release conditions

Kalvin Henderson, 22, a resident of Calgary, has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Possession of break and enter tools
  • Failing to comply with Probation Order
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance

As well, Mounties say Henderson had two arrest warrants issued by Calgary Police Service, which were executed.

Police say both Henderson and Draxel had Judicial Interim Release Hearings. Henderson was released to appear May 1, 2023 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury. Draxel was remanded into custody to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on April 3, 2023, by CCTV, to speak to his release.

Staff Sergeant Steve Browne, Commander of Didsbury RCMP Detachment stated, “These arrests exemplify the importance of Alberta residents calling the police when they observe suspicious people or activity in their communities. The effort of this resident to simply call the police because they believed the suspects were suspicious resulted in two property/drug offenders being arrested and the seizure of a fairly significant amount of drugs.”
