It’s 10 years in jail and a lifetime firearms ban for a central Alberta man accused of abducting and beating a woman two years ago.

Lionel Richard Twins, 62, of the Louis Bull First Nation, was sentenced in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench on March 23, 2023, after being convicted on three counts following his trial in May 2022.

Twins received a 10-year sentence for attempted murder, two-year sentence for kidnapping, and a three-month sentence for flight from a peace officer, all to be served concurrently.

Twins was originally charged with attempted murder, kidnapping without a firearm, aggravated assault, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and two counts of assault in the January 2021 incident.

According to Maskwacis RCMP, the series of events began around 11:00 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2021 when officers were called to the Cree Nation community of Pigeon Lake after learning an adult female had been abducted from a residence.

Police say they searched throughout the night for the suspect vehicle, and in the early morning hours, were dispatched to a commercial business after a witness located a female with life-threatening injuries.

Mounties and EMS responded immediately and confirmed the woman was the abducted victim from earlier in the evening. She was taken to a local area hospital for treatment, in serious condition.

RCMP located and stopped the suspect vehicle around 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2021, but the suspect was said to have fled into a wooded area. He was apprehended, however, after a brief foot chase.
