Sylvan Lake man sentenced in stolen vehicle, flight from police incidents

Feb 2, 2023 | 3:36 PM

A Sylvan Lake man previously facing several criminal charges in relation to a stolen vehicle and flight from police incidents last year was sentenced to several weeks in jail.

Steven Dale Brazeau, 31, was sentenced in Fort Saskatchewan provincial court on Nov. 3, 2022, after previously being scheduled for trial on Feb. 1, 2023.

Brazeau was given a 45-day sentence in total after being convicted on counts of possession of property over $5000, made/possess identity documents, and fail to comply with a release order (x2).

He was also ordered to pay a fine of $3,000 for driving a motor vehicle with no insurance under the Traffic Safety Act.

It was just before 1:00 p.m. on March 15, 2022 when Fort Saskatchewan RCMP received a complaint from the public that a male had jumped out of a Mercedes Benz at the intersection of Highway 28A and Highway 37, abandoning it.

Police say members from Fort Saskatchewan and neighbouring Strathcona County responded, as the vehicle description matched that of a suspect vehicle Strathcona County RCMP were attempting to locate in relation to a criminal flight from police incident.

Once on scene, police said, it was determined the abandoned grey 2006 Mercedes Benz was stolen, and it was the same vehicle involved in criminal flights over the previous two days in Vermilion and Edmonton. Mounties said it was indeed the same vehicle Strathcona County RCMP were attempting to locate.

The driver, who was the lone occupant, was located a short distance from the scene and subsequently arrested.
