Rate of new influenza cases in Central Zone slows again over the past week

The rate of new influenza cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and flu-related deaths in the AHS Central Zone have once again slowed down over the past week.

According to Alberta Health, there are currently 1,038 cases of influenza confirmed in the Central Zone as of January 21, 2023, up seven over the last seven days.

Hospitalizations in the Central Zone due to the flu have risen to 228, up three from the week before.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions are now at 24, up one from last week, while the number of deaths related to the flu in the Central Zone remains at 19 so far this season.

Elsewhere throughout the province, the Calgary Zone has 2,922 cases of influenza with 749 hospitalizations, 83 ICU admissions and 30 deaths.

The Edmonton Zone has 2,461 cases of influenza, 546 hospitalizations, 54 ICU admissions, and 22 flu-related deaths.

The North Zone currently has 1,545 cases of influenza, 250 hospitalizations, 24 ICU admissions, and 13 deaths.

The South Zone has 671 cases of influenza as of Jan. 21, with 201 hospitalizations, 20 ICU admissions, and 18 flu-related deaths.
