Year in Review: Ponoka has everything one needs, mayor says

Jan 2, 2023 | 10:00 AM

Ponoka’s Mayor Kevin Ferguson says, when looking back at the year that was, that the town he leads is a “hidden treasure.”

In a year-end interview, Ferguson pointed to a record 100,000+ who attended this year’s Ponoka Stampede, which returned to its usual scale for the first time since 2019.

“When it goes away and then it comes back, you begin to realize just how fantastic it really is and how important it is to the town,” he says. “When you begin to think about that amount of people that went through our town in the two weeks of the Stampede, it was just incredible. The vibe was incredible; folks were ready to get their lives back.”

Among other things, Ferguson also noted the first summer of use at the indoor hockey rink following upgrades, a hockey camp that came to town, upgrades to the aquaplex which included new flooring and a new HVAC system, as well as resurfaced tennis and pickleball courts.

In 2023, a noteworthy addition to town will be a dog park, he hopes.

“With both our arena and our aquaplex, we really brought those buildings back to new life,” he says. “For all intents and purposes, they’re brand new buildings for us.”

Ferguson also praises work done on wayfinding signage installed in town, and how the public came together for things like Christmas.

He notes roughly 1,500 people came out to see the CP Holiday Train in December.

Ferguson added that businesses have been patient as major roadwork was done along 51 Street.

Ponoka has a lot to offer, he believes, including continued incentive programs which in some way played a part in attracting 13 new business starts in 2022.

Then there’s the ag event centre which hosts concerts, and not to mention rodeo events each weekend.

“It’s the best of both worlds. We’ve got it all. We’ve got everything anybody would need here,” he said. “There’s plenty of opportunities or reasons why you can come visit us and, of course, there are plenty of reasons why you could stay too.”
