Upward trend continues in flu cases, hospitalizations throughout Central Zone

Influenza cases and the number of hospitalizations due to the flu are continuing to rise in the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Zone.

According to Alberta Health, 877 cases of influenza have been confirmed in the Central Zone as of December 17, up by 82 cases over the past week.

Hospitalizations in the Central Zone due to the flu have risen to 165 over the past week, up by 30 from the week before.

Intensive Care Unit admissions are now 17, up five over the past week, while the number of deaths related to the flu in the Central Zone this past week increased by two once again, to eight.

Elsewhere throughout the province, the Calgary Zone has 2,647 cases of influenza with 646 hospitalizations, 68 ICU admissions and 17 deaths.

The Edmonton Zone has 2,261 cases of influenza, 473 hospitalizations, 52 ICU admissions, and 17 flu-related deaths.

The North Zone currently has 1,387 cases of influenza, 202 hospitalizations, 19 ICU admissions, and six deaths.

The South Zone has 497 cases of influenza as of December 17, with 138 hospitalizations, 14 ICU admissions, and nine flu-related deaths.
