Innisfail Legion unveils new mural project

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 104 Innisfail members and invited guests were the first to learn of a new mural project launched by the Innisfail Legion during the branch’s annual Remembrance Day gathering last week.

Following the cenotaph ceremony, Innisfail Legion Branch 104 President Stephen Black unveiled plans to have a series of murals painted on the street facing exterior walls next summer.

“This is another way we can show the community what the Legion is about, a reminder to everyone travelling down Main Street to remember the sacrifices of those who have fought to protect the way of life we enjoy in Canada today,” says Black.

Officials say the final scope of the project will be determined by the amount of money raised for the project over the coming months.

“Ideally, I would like to see us raise about $40,000 so we could have a mural on each of our street facing walls,” Black told the crowd gathered inside the Legion Club Room on November 11.

The Innisfail Legion says former Innisfail resident Karen Scarlett will be working on the murals. Officials say Scarlett was the artist who designed and developed the Welcome mural that was painted last summer at The Coffee Cottage in Innisfail.

“When Karen, along with Jason Heistad, presented the Executive Committee with the idea we knew we wanted to find a way to make it happen,” said Black. “Seeing how much excitement and community spirit there was in Innisfail while the Coffee Cottage mural was being painted, we knew it would be something that would be good for the community.”

Officials say Black was the first to put a donation in towards the project but many others were quick to follow. Several local families donated to the project on behalf of loved ones who were soldiers and throughout the course of the day, just over $14,000 was committed to the project.

Officials say while Scarlett had presented the Legion Executive Committee with an idea last spring, the final design has not been decided, but Scarlett assured those gathered on November 11 she will work with the Mural Project Committee on the design to ensure it reflects all branches of military service.

The Royal Canadian Legion Innisfail Branch 104 is said to have the third largest membership base of all Legions in Canada. In the past they have raised funds for the Town of Innisfail Community Bus and for the 104 Starfighter plane mounted in the branch parking lot.

This project, say officials, will be overseen by a committee of members with Black as the chairperson of the committee.
