Rebels back on track with 4-1 victory over Oil Kings

The Red Deer Rebels have ended their four-game losing streak, defeating the Oil Kings 4-1 Tuesday evening at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

In the first period, the Rebels struck first when Jace Isley netted a wrist shot from the slot on goaltender Kolby Hay at 4:46. His 12th goal of the season was assisted by Frantisek Formanek and Jayden Grubbe, bringing the team to a 1-0 lead.

After 20 minutes of play, Red Deer outshot Edmonton 13-4.

In the middle frame, the Oil Kings’ Carter Kowalyk was sent to the box for cross checking. The Rebels seized the power play opportunity when captain Jayden Grubbe wristed one home from the high slot. His fifth goal of the season was assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Kai Uchacz at 6:43, doubling the lead 2-0.

Edmonton later found themselves down a man once again after John Szabo was called for interference on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey. Left wide open, with his third goal of the season, Kalan Lind netted the Rebels’ third goal of the night. At the 15 minute mark, the power play goal was assisted by Jayden Grubbe and Christoffer Sedoff.

Despite the Oil Kings outshooting the Rebels 15-13, Red Deer led 3-0 after 40 minutes.

In the third period, Edmonton’s Ben Wright was given a minor penalty for hooking at 1:46, leading to Red Deer’s Kalan Lind capitalizing on the man advantage opportunity once again with back-to-back power play goals. It was Lind’s fourth goal of the season, assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Kai Uchacz to make it 4-0 Rebels.

Less than four minutes later, Red Deer’s Jace Isley was sent to the box for cross checking. It was now the Oil Kings that maximized their power play opportunity, as Carson Golder sored his fifth goal of the season at 6:29 on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey. Vojtech Port and Rhett Melnyk assisted on the goal, getting the Oil Kings on the board for the first time in the game, trailing the Rebels 4-1.

The Rebels outshot the Oil Kings 11-5 in the third period and 37-24 overall.

Red Deer went 3/7 on the power play while Edmonton went 1/11.

Edmonton’s Carson Golder who scored the Oil Kings only goal of the evening received the game’s third star, while the Rebels received the remaining two. Christoffer Sedoff earned the second star for his three assists while Kalan Lind received the first star for his two goals of the game.
