An Edmonton man is facing charges after Red Deer Mounties seized fentanyl from a local hotel room this week.

On Nov. 2, 2022, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Red Deer RCMP were called to a north end motel after employees found suspicious items and an unidentified powder in a room. Upon arrival, officers quickly identified the items as drug paraphernalia and suspected the powder to be fentanyl.

Police say safety measure were established around the room and Red Deer RCMP requested the RCMP’s specialized Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) team to attend and confirm the substances.

On Nov. 3, 2022, the CLEAR team began their investigation and confirmed the presumptive presence of fentanyl in the substance located inside the motel room.

RCMP with the support of the CLEAR team, seized 2.9 kilograms of the substance.

As a result of the investigation, Red Deer RCMP have arrested and charged a 30-year-old resident of Edmonton with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, theft of motor vehicle and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

RCMP say the suspect has been remanded and was set to appear before Red Deer provincial court on Nov. 4, 2022.
