Fire breaks out at disposal company west of Red Deer

Nov 1, 2022 | 11:07 AM

A fire broke out this morning at a business west of Red Deer, and crews are expected to be on scene for several hours.

Red Deer County fire crews were called out to 22 Belich Crescent, the site of Empringham Disposal, just before 9 a.m.

Mutual aid was given by Red Deer and Sylvan Lake fire departments. County peace officers and EMS were also on-site.

Fire Inspector Scott Tuton says one person was inside the large warehouse structure when the fire broke out. That person was unharmed.

“There was a vehicle inside the building working on sorting the recycling and garbage that’s in there. The operator noticed the smoke, shut the machine down, climbed out and called the fire department,” says Tuton.

“The building is filled with cardboard and garbage, and the damage is hard to tell because we can’t see very well in there.”

Tuton says more of an update will be available later.

Meantime, smoke was drifting across the QEII Highway into Red Deer, and visibility may be somewhat affected.
