ASIRT investigating death of hospital patient in Sundre

Sep 24, 2022 | 10:16 AM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after a patient in Sundre under the care of AHS died.

RCMP say it was Sept. 23 at about 11 a.m. when Sundre officers responded to a 911 call from an Alberta Health Services peace officer who required help dealing with a physically violent subject at the local hospital.

Upon arrival, a physical confrontation took place. After, the male subject went into medical distress.

At about 12:20 p.m., the 72-year-old man, a Sundre resident, died in hospital, police say.

“The Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable,” a release from Alberta RCMP states.

“This is why, as soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police and Peace Officer during this investigation.”

They add that independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the Alberta RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during the incident.

“RCMP training, policy, police response, and the duty status of the members involved will be subject to review,” RCMP say. “The Alberta RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident.
