Red Deer Hospice Handbag Event celebrates 10 years

Aug 17, 2022 | 3:54 PM

The Red Deer Hospice Society says its popular Hospice Handbag Lunch is coming back this September.

Presented by Magpie Textile Co., the unique event provides a chance to support resident comfort care at Red Deer Hospice while getting something for yourself or another special purse collector in your life.

To kick off the event, a wide selection of designer handbags will go up for online auction starting Sept, 8, 2022. Officials say the pre-bidding will run right up to and during the in person lunch planned for Sept. 21, 2022. Luncheon attendees will not only have the chance to view all the handbags available through the online auction in-person but they will also be able to bid on a selection of handbags reserved specially for them at the event.

“Our online auction was so popular last time we decided to incorporate it again” shared Fonda Devereaux, Event Coordinator at Red Deer Hospice. “Part of the fun of moving the event online was being able to offer a wider variety of bags to a larger audience, and we are excited to continue offering more ways for this generous community to get involved. But first we need to build our collection!”

New designer handbag donations are still being accepted until Aug. 31.

Organizers say the event began in 2012 with a group of women who desired to enjoy the camaraderie of friends while raising funds and awareness for Red Deer Hospice. In 2014, the designer handbag auction was added to the luncheon. All the handbags were donated and auctioning them was a hit with attendees. In 2020, COVID-19 required the event be shifted to an online auction. To date, this event has raised over $60,000 for Red Deer Hospice.

Tickets for the Luncheon are now on sale with limited seating available. To get your tickets, more information and to bid, visit www.reddeerhospice.com.

All proceeds from the auction support resident comfort and care at the Red Deer Hospice.
