Ubuntu Youth hosting International Youth Day events this Sunday

Aug 12, 2022 | 3:37 PM

The Ubuntu Youth Council is once hosting International Youth Day (IYD) events in Red Deer, this Sunday, August 14 from 3-9 p.m. at Festival Hall.

An offshoot of Ubuntu-Mobilizing Central Alberta, this is the third year the youth council is putting on official events for Red Deerians.

All ages are welcome to take part in the entirely free event, which this year includes the theme of Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages.

According to the United Nations, the theme is meant to, “amplify the message that action is needed across all generations and leave no one behind.”

This year, there will be community conversations about ageism in employment, plus health and civic participation, as well as dance, live music from a local DJ, games and prizes, BBQ, and the conclusion of the youth council’s Hoops Unite basketball tournament.

“We want all individuals who hear about International Youth Day to come out and just enjoy themselves, not be afraid to put themselves out there. In reality, people might be different, but most of the time they may be going through similar issues, so why not work together to find a common ground to resolve and understand those issues a little bit better?” says Morris Bornyi, Support Youth Program Coordinator.

“I have learned that by meeting new people and listening to new perspectives, it has opened a door for me to feel comfortable to ask when I might not know something or to speak up because I might have an opinion that others agree with. I have jumped out of my shell and I am not afraid to have a voice because that’s exactly what we encourage everyone to have.”

Further information about IYD events this Sunday can be found on the Ubuntu Youth Council Facebook page.
