Ponoka lauching household battery recycling pilot project

Jul 17, 2022 | 9:00 AM

The Town of Ponoka is launching a household battery recycling pilot project on July 25.

The pilot is taking place at the Waste Transfer Station northeast of the town’s boundary on 46 Street, and is an expansion of its e-waste electronics recycling program.

“The Town of Ponoka has diverted nearly half of its waste from the landfill over the past two years,” says Dwayne Kwolick, Manager of Environmental Services.

“The new household battery recycling pilot program is another way the Town can continue its mission of diverting waste from the landfill.”

Acceptable batteries include those which weigh less than 5 kilograms or 11 pounds.

According to the Town, the positive and negative battery terminals (both ends) must be taped using clear packing tape, duct tape or non-conductive electrical tape. The Waste Transfer Station will not accept batteries with painter’s tape, masking tape or scotch tape.

The Waste Transfer Station will also continue to accept vehicle batteries for recycling. Note that the Waste Transfer Station will not accept any batteries that show signs of damage, the Town adds.

When recycling batteries, citizens are asked to check in by driving onto the scale at the Waste Transfer Station.

The Waste Transfer Station is currently on summer hours until October 31 and is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
