Sexual Assault Support Centre earns second Inspiration Award

The Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre (CASASC) is celebrating recently receiving an Inspiration Award from the Ministry of Community and Social Services.

Held in Calgary late this month, the awards recognize organizations who have displayed leadership in ending family violence and abuse in communities across the province.

CASASC was recently unveiled officially as a tenant at the under construction Child Advocacy Centre, a relocation it is hoping to raise funds for.

“Having to adapt to COVID realities in October 2020, the Education Program underwent a complete revision of all programming, developing content to virtual teaching modalities and adapting to meet the needs of in-person teaching dynamics,” said former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Lois Mitchell, who was the ceremony’s MC.

“The CASASC Education Program grew in the following months from one solidified program into five formal school offerings for Grades K-12, with full availability to schools and community starting September 2021.”

The CASASC Education Program is a prevention-focused program designed to prevent sexual violence in the central Alberta region. It is the home of educational programming like No Secrets K-4 and Healthy Dating Relationships 101. The team consists of five educators who completed 477 presentations during the 2021-2022 school year.

That equates to 8,900 students in K-12, an increase from 7,600 the previous year.

“I am so very proud of the Education Team for their hard work and dedication to violence prevention. Our facilitators are amazing and present the content in safe, supportive and positive ways. As the Inspiration Award shows our efforts have not gone unnoticed. We have been working hard since October 2020 developing and implementing a full suite of new grade K-12 prevention education programming in our central Albertan schools,” says CASASC’s Carlia Schwab, Manager, Education & Community Relations.

“A big thank you to the Community and Social Services Ministry for their recognition and to all the schools we’ve worked with this past school year. We wouldn’t be nearly as successful as we are without the engagement and care of our schools.”

This is CASASC’s second Inspiration Award, receiving it the first time in 2018 for offering innovative and comprehensive programs.
