Red Deer Games Foundation announces latest grant recipients

The Red Deer Games Foundation has announced recipients of its spring 2022 round of Athlete Development Grants.

These grants are awarded to Red Deer and area residents who have demonstrated a high level of ability and strong commitment to their sport.

Athletes also achieved competence at the international, national, provincial or regional level, and funds are meant to offset costs of training and equipment as they pursue their athletic endeavours.

Nicholas Nechifor: (Red Deer) Tennis – Recent results: Currently ranked as the #3 12U player in Alberta and the #1 player 11U player in Alberta. Nicholas is currently ranked #33 12U player in Canada and the #10 11U player in Canada.

McKinley Penninga: (Red Deer) Basketball – a grade 10 student member of Lindsay Thurber Raiders’ senior basketball and volleyball teams, as well as the Calgary Cobras Basketball Club’s 16U Elite Team.

Makenna Colenutt: (Red Deer) Freestyle Mogul Skiing – after returning to training and competition from injury, Makenna competed both provincially and nationally in the past season. Currently ranked #6 in Alberta for Freestyle Mogul Skiing. Makenna is a member of the Central Freestyle Ski Club and the Jasper Freeride Provincial Development Team.

Elyse Borys: (Red Deer) Team Handball – a 17 year old St. Joseph’s High School student, Elyse was selected to the U18 Canadian National Women’s Handball Team this spring and qualified for the U20 World Championship at their April qualifying tournament in Mexico, while leading Team Canada in scoring during the event…

Kesaly Von Kuster: (Bentley) Team Handball – Kesaly is a member of Alberta’s Senior Women’s Handball Team, Alberta’s U18 Women’s Handball Team and the Canadian Youth Handball Team, capturing a Bronze Medal at North American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Mexico in April. Kesaly played school handball in Bentley and club handball in Calgary.

Keith MacInnis: (Red Deer) Hockey – Keith is a defenseman who played this past season at the Yale Hockey Academy in Abbotsford, BC, and had previously played with Sylvan Lake (Atom AA) and with Red Deer Rebels (Bantam AAA) where he as named the Rookie of the Year for the Alberta Bantam AAA league. Was a member of Team Alberta at the WHL Cup this past season, where he was selected as a First Team All-Star. Currently, Keith is choosing his next steps – either the major junior hockey pathway (WHL) or the USHL/NCAA pathway.
