Alberta Sports Hall of Fame welcomes new board members

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is welcoming a handful of new board members.

Located in Red Deer, the Hall is also saying thank you to a number of outgoing board members.

New members include Lloyd Bentz, Murray Cunningham, and Terry Morris.

According to a release:

  • Lloyd Bentz’s career and volunteer work has been dedicated to amateur sport development in Alberta. His education includes a Bachelor of Physical Education, a Professional Diploma After Degree in Education, and a Masters of Arts with an emphasis in Sport Management. A few of his awards include the Interprovincial Sport and Recreation Service Award (2019), Premiers Award of Excellence for Alberta Future Leaders (2005), and Alberta Centennial Medal for Sport and Recreation Development (2005).
  • Murray Cunningham is currently a President and CEO at Scott Builders Inc. He has an impressive resume in Athletics which includes helping the Golden Bears basketball win the program’s first National Championship in 1994. He won the Wilson Challenge trophy at U of A Male Athlete of the Year in 1996. A few of his community involvements include a founder of the Lacombe Community Basketball Association and chair of the Lacombe Athletic Park Association.
  • Terry Morris was previously an Event Manager at Curling Canada from 2005 – 2020. He managed the Canadian Curling Championship across Canada which included the Olympic Curling Trials. He also managed the International Curling Championships for the World Curling Federation including both Men’s and Women’s Worlds. His other achievements include becoming a Chairman/President for the Edmonton 2005 Tim Horton’s Brier where the Brier surpassed all records for attendance and financial results.

Outgoing members include Alfred Fischer, Hugh Kellough, Jack Neumann, and Margaret Phelan.

  • Alfred Fischer’s contribution to sports in Alberta over the last 30 years has had an immeasurable impact on the world of sports provincially, nationally, and internationally. Alf Fischer served as President of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Ski Association from 1983 to 1996; Director of the Canadian Ski Association from 1983 to 1994; President of the Alberta Ski and Snowboard Association from 1997 to the present. A few of his awards include the: Alberta Achievement Award for Skiing, Volunteer of the Year Award, and Canadian Ski Association Service Award.
  • Hugh Kellough was born and raised in Edmonton in 1944 and is married with two children. He has been in the Farm and Construction Short Line Manufacturing Business for 50 years and is currently operating Kellough Enterprises Inc. and marketing the Kello-Bilt Product and Parts in Canada. He has been involved with playing, coaching, and managing hockey and baseball clubs his whole life and is also a member of Baseball Alberta Life.
  • Jack Neumann has been a fixture on the Alberta sports scene for the last three decades. He volunteered as a statistician for the Calgary Canucks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and as an accountant in the Western Hockey League in the 1970s to his many years of service as the University of Calgary Dinos Sports Information Director (1978 – Present). Jack stayed involved in a fundraising capacity and helped raise more than $1 million for athletic scholarships for Dinos student athletes.
  • Margaret Phelan is a former General Manager/Economic Development Officer at the Community Features East Parkland. From 1996 – 2001 she was an Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet Chairman and continues to volunteer every year. Since 2002, Margaret has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
