Ethan Choi (-9) 2022 Alberta Open Champion (Alberta Golf)
Cut Short By Rain

Ethan Choi wins rain shortened Alberta Open in Sundre

Jun 23, 2022 | 4:56 PM

All golfers who made the cut at this year’s Alberta Open presented by SVR Lawyers, teed off on Thursday for the final round at Sundre Golf Club

But by noon, heavy rain brought them off the course and solid rain all afternoon washed out the final round.

Officials say, however, that not everyone in the field managed nine holes, so the champion was based on the leader after Wednesday’s 2nd round.

Ethan Choi from Lethbridge shot rounds of 67 and 68 to win the Championship with a 9-under par total, one better than professional Stefan Cox who had back-to-back 68s for a runner up finish and the top spot in the professional division and a cheque for $8,000. Lacombe’s Brady McKinlay finished 5th overall, 4 back of  Choi.

Cox, from the UK, played university golf with the Arizona Wildcats and now lives in Calgary as the Director of Instruction at The Calgary Golf and Country Club.

Stefan Cox (-8) Alberta Open Professional Division Winner (Alberta Golf)

Ethan Choi, a standout amateur playing University golf for the North Carolina State Wolfpack, said it was a strange week with all the weather delays and only two rounds, but the win gives him a spot in the 2023 Pacific Coast Amateur and a lot of confidence going forward.

“It feels great to be able to hold the trophy at the end of the week,” Choi admitted. “To know that I can compete with the best players in this province means a lot, I’m excited.”
