Second trial date set for accused in stabbing near O’Chiese

Jun 22, 2022 | 1:49 PM

A man from O’Chiese First Nation charged in relation to a stabbing this past February has been given a trial date.

Michael Mackinaw, 38, now knows he will go to trial in a Rocky Mountain House courtroom on March 13, 2023, after a court appearance earlier this spring.

Stemming from events that took place on Feb. 8, Mackinaw was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and two counts of failure to comply with a release order. On these counts, he will go to trial on November 22, 2022.

Following events the next day, he was then charged with aggravated assault and two counts of failure to comply with a release order — the charges for which he’ll appear next winter.

It was Feb. 8 when RCMP had said they were investigating an incident where a suspect was driving a vehicle on the O’Chiese First Nation, when the suspect and a passenger had a verbal confrontation. The suspect allegedly threatened the passenger — the owner of the vehicle — with a weapon.

At about 8 p.m. the following day, RCMP in Rocky Mountain House responded to a 911 call about a male who had reportedly been stabbed on the Sunchild Road. That man was taken to hospital by STARS.

The suspect, who was Mackinaw, was arrested at a later time after warrants had been issued.
