Calgary cabinet minister Rajan Sawhney running in UCP leadership race

Jun 13, 2022 | 2:26 PM

Calgary cabinet minister Rajan Sawhney says she is running in the race to replace Jason Kenney as United Conservative leader and Alberta premier.

Making an announcement in Edmonton Monday morning, she then travelled the province to announce her candidacy from other locations.

At 12:30 p.m., Sawhney made her second stop of the day in Penhold at the Junction 42 Tim Horton’s location.

She says if she were to win, she would order a public inquiry into how the province handled the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sawhney says the health crisis caused much suffering and economic hardship and a full airing is needed to learn lessons and to move forward. She says she wouldn’t commit to hold an inquiry before the next provincial election in May as it would need time to be thorough and to make sure all stakeholders were consulted.

Sawhney is the first candidate from Calgary in the race and has stepped down as transportation minister to avoid any conflict of interest while she pursues the leadership.

Sawhney also stopped in Airdrie and Calgary.

She is now in the running for the UCP’s leadership along with former Wild Rose Party leader Danielle Smith, Bill Rock, the mayor of Amisk, a village in east-central Alberta, UCP MLA Travis Toews, former Wild Rose leader Brian Jean, fellow UCP cabinet member Leela Aheer, and Independent MLA Todd Loewen.
