Bains receives Bobby Clarke Award at WHL Awards ceremony

During a virtual ceremony, the Western Hockey League doled out its annual awards on June 1.

Chief among the winners was Red Deer Rebel forward Arshdeep Bains, who was the league’s leading scorer this past season with 43 goals and 69 assists for 112 points.

The Bobby Clarke Award, which goes to the top point-getter each season, is Bains’s first, and last of course, as he aged out of the WHL this year, and was signed by the Vancouver Canucks.

A Surrey native, Bains was also second league-wide with 10 game-winning goals, and he finished the season with five scoring streaks of six games or longer. That included a 14-game scoring streak from March 5-April 16 in which he had 20 goals and 12 helpers.

Bains wasn’t the only Rebel to be up for an award this season, with Ben King the Central Division finalist for WHL Player of the Year.

The 20-year-old had 52 assists and 53 goals for 105 points in 68 games. That was good for second in points league-wide, behind linemate Bains. King was beat out for the award by Logan Stankoven, who had 45 goals and 59 assists for 104 points in 59 games with the Kamloops Blazers.

The Rebels’ Steve Konowalchuk was nominated for Coach of the Year, but James Patrick with the Winnipeg ICE took the honours. Brent Sutter was also nominated for Executive of the Year, though Matt Cockell, also with the ICE, took the award.

Another Red Deer product, Harrison Lodewyk, was the East Division’s nominee for Scholastic Player of the Year, but was beat out by Connor Levis of the Blazers.

Lodewyk plays for the Prince Albert Raiders, and notched two goals and two assists in 55 games during his rookie season. The award goes to a player with exceptionally high school averages and outstanding commitment to academics.
